Memory Assessments for Older People

Dr Yasir Hameed, Consultant Psychiatrist is a specialist in general and old age psychiatry. He works with Anchor Psychiatry Group as an Associate and provides memory assessments.

The purpose of the assessment is to know more about your memory problems, the causes of them, and if there is treatment available to help reduce them or help you cope better with them.

As there are many causes for memory problems, it is important to have this assessment to know the reason and what treatment would help.

What to Expect from your Memory Assessment

Dr Hameed’s assessments and appointments take place via a home visit. Each assessment is different, and depending on the complexity, it could take between 90 minutes to two hours to complete. The assessment has two main parts; the first is history taking and includes information from you and your relative (if applicable) about the current memory problems and the impact on daily life and other relevant information (such as your medical history).

The second part includes conducting a memory test (also called a cognitive examination). These tests have no pass or fail scores, but they will provide helpful information to the clinician regarding the severity of the memory problems. For further information see the FAQ section below.

Memory and Older Persons Mental Health Clinic Frequently Asked Questions

During the assessment, the clinician will gather information about your safety to continue driving from you and your relative, friend or carer. If applicable, we will discuss the benefits and risks of continuing to drive. We will also offer you an information leaflet about driving and dementia.

The DVLA and your insurance require you to notify them about the diagnosis of dementia. The DVLA will then write to your clinician and GP asking them for more information about your diagnosis and treatment. If there are no concerns about your driving, and you are not experiencing side effects from your memory medication, then the DVLA will issue you a driving license that must be renewed annually.

Many patients with dementia can continue to drive, especially in the early or mild stages, and it is, in fact, important that they are supported to continue driving to keep their independence.

Memory assessment via home visit: £660*

Review appointments via home visit: £300*

Please note memory assessments and reviews take place via a home visit. Dr Hameed does not offer video consultations.

*Please be advised any costs quoted reflect our current appointment charges, however these may be subject to change from time to time and you will be charged according to the cost at the time your appointment is booked.

All patients diagnosed with dementia will be referred for memory treatment services in your local area so that you can access memory treatment medications and other non-medication interventions from them. Your GP can make the referral. We will also give you information on accessing post-diagnosis support services, for example, Norfolk and Waveney Dementia Support Service.

In many cases, the clinician could reach a provisional diagnosis and determine the causes of your memory problems and what interventions would help. However, in some cases, more assessments or tests would be needed, for example, having a brain scan or completing further in-depth cognitive assessments (also called neuropsychological assessments).

  • Please let us know in advance if you are feeling unwell. Especially important for symptoms of a new, persistent cough and/or fever.
  • Have any spectacles to hand, especially for reading.
  • Be wearing your hearing aid if you have one.
  • Have ready details of any medications you are currently prescribed.
  • Having a family member or a friend with you is always helpful during the assessment. Their presence is useful to support you during the assessment. It will also allow the clinician to get more information from them regarding their point of view and if they have any concerns. This will allow us to know how we could offer more help and support for them following the assessment and the diagnosis if needed.

We actively encourage you to discuss accessing our service with your GP and request to receive an initial referral from your GP. This is because your GP is the medical professional responsible for co-ordinating your health care and their involvement helps to ensure that professionals can communicate to maintain best practice. When referring to us, your GP can provide relevant clinical information to inform our approach. We request your permission to send clinical letters to your GP following appointments to keep them informed and where necessary to liaise with your GP to prioritise your physical and mental health care. Once we have received your GP referral letter, we will contact you to register you with our service and add you to our waiting list. We can let you know an up-to-date approximate wait time at the point you are added to our wait list. Once an memory assessment becomes available, we will contact you to arrange the home visit and at that stage you will need to pay for the assessment to confirm your appointment.

If you are registered with a private medical insurer, please be aware that only some of us see insured patients. It is important to let us know at the time of your initial inquiry if you are planning to use insurance to cover your fees, we will then be able to advise if we are able to accommodate this.
